Support Conservation in your Community!
Conservation districts offer a variety of ways to get involved, whether you’re looking to volunteer, learn new skills, or take action to protect our soil, water, and wildlife habitat. Every district is unique so be sure to check with your local conservation district to see what opportunities are available in your area!
Volunteer Opportunities
Many conservation districts host hands-on events where you can help improve local land and water resources. Volunteer opportunities vary by district but may include:
- Planting native trees and shrubs to restore streambanks and improve habitat.
- Removing unwanted weeds and invasive species to help native plants thrive.
- Salmon habitat restoration projects such as stream cleanups and fish passage improvements.
- Creating pollinator-friendly spaces with native plants and habitat features.
- Monitoring water quality by collecting data on local rivers, lakes, and wetlands.
- Assisting with community education at workshops, school programs, or outreach events.

Education & Workshops
Conservation districts provide free or low-cost educational opportunities to help landowners, farmers, and community members learn about conservation practices. Depending on your district, you may find:
- Workshops and training: Learn about soil health, riparian restoration, wildfire preparedness, rain gardens, and more.
- Farmer and landowner programs: Gain hands-on knowledge about rotational grazing, irrigation efficiency, agroforestry, and other conservation-friendly practices.
- Gardening and native plant classes: Discover how to design landscapes that save water, reduce chemical use, and attract wildlife.
- Pollinator conservation: Learn how to create habitat for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

Take Action in Your Community
There are many ways to support conservation efforts right where you live!
- Join a community project: Many districts help organize tree-planting events, stream cleanups, and habitat restoration projects.
- Share your input: Provide feedback on local conservation programs and land-use planning decisions that affect natural resources.
- Participate in the Voluntary Stewardship Program (VSP): If you are a farmer, rancher, or agricultural landowner, check if your county participates in this program, which supports voluntary conservation efforts on working lands. Find out more at: www.vsp.wa.gov
- Use conservation practices on your land: Whether you own a backyard, a farm, or forested property, adopting conservation-friendly practices can improve soil, water, and habitat health. Your local district can help!
Support Conservation Efforts
You don’t have to volunteer to make a difference. Your everyday actions can support conservation efforts across the state.
- Attend local conservation events: Many districts host plant sales, farm tours, and educational fairs.
- Buy native plants: Many districts hold annual native plant sales that help support pollinators and improve habitat.
- Recreate responsibly: Follow “Leave No Trace” principles when enjoying public lands and waterways.
- Share your conservation story: Show how you’re supporting land and water conservation by planting natives, restoring habitat, or improving soil health.
